Iran: Masha Amini and her hairlock, a social protest
Protests have been spreading for the killing of the young Masha Amini, all over in Iran and other Countries. The woman, beaten by “moral police”officers, a unit responsible for the application of the Iranian code for women, was arrested because she had worn the veil incorrectly showing a lock of her hair. The girl, in coma at the hospital, died 3 days later.
The head of the police of Teheran denied all the charges from Masha’s family and mass media and defined the unfortunate event as “an unlucky accident”, but It wasn’t true. The incident was reported by the Kurdish “ONG”, an organization for human rights. According to them during the riots, 5 people died, 75 injured and 250 were arrested, among them there were also 3 foreign citizens. The protest also has spred in many squares and universities. Also young men and students had taken part in it. They all together, male and female citizens, shouted the dead girl’s name. During these protests, Iranian women cut their hair and performed some symbolic actions like burning the hijab. The armed forces are still committing monstrous violent acts , wounding rioters with real bullets and tear gas. The ONU also denounces “the violent repression” of rioters in Iran, after Mahsa’s death. Even some foreign countries, including France, commented about the incident calling it “deeply shocking” infact the foreign ministry condemned the arrest and the violence that followed. Influential women in society posted videos on Instagram or Twitter, writing that «Iranian women show their anger by cutting their hair and burning their hijabs to protest the killing of Masha Amini by the hijab police». These kind of episodes are increasingly frequently in Iran since in recent weeks the conservative President Judahim Raisi ordered a tightening in the stricter application of Islamic laws; in particular the obligation of the veil, introduced at the time of the Islamic revolution in 1979. That obligation to wear the veil over the years has been observed but in a more liberal way, especially in large cities. This isn’t just a protest against the compulsory veil. We can say that this episode is a pretext to rebel against a totalitarian system in which there is no indulgence on anything. Every totalitarian system depends on symbols and rituals, but in this way it makes itself vulnerable. Using the veil becomes a political weapon. Someone on social media even ventures a name for a new movement: «Women, Life, Freedom». But the arrests are already dozens. That’s my dream : I see far away a girl dancing in the square : she throws the hijab in a bonfire.
