Trump

Donald Trump, 70 years old, is the 45th President of the United States. He is the oldest president ever elected surpassing Ronald Reagan, who was 69 years old at his election in 1980. He announced his candidacy for president as a Republican in June 2015. He defeated his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, who would have been the first woman President in 240-year US history. He won 290 Electoral Colleges votes to 232 for Hillary Clinton.

First changes will be felt immediately, because the shift from Barack Obama’s presidency is enormous. As Brian Beutler, a journalist, says in “The New Republic”, Trump will almost certainly abrogate Obama’s international climate agreement and the global powers agreement preventing Iran from creating their own nuclear arsenal. Republicans will send Trump legislation undermining Obama’s legacy everywhere they can find congressional majorities to do so. The Supreme Court will return to conservative control, and over the next four years, it may very well become far more conservative. Voting rights could be further weakened; the constitutional right to abortion is vulnerable to abolition.

All those changes may seem uncomfortable for some, indeed during the voting, people started getting scared when they saw Trump overtaking Hillary Clinton. Some of his supporters celebrated his victory by doing unbelievable things, quoting a gay man having his head smashed by Trump followers. Many protesters have filled streets in midtown Manhattan shouting “Not my president” and violent demonstrations have taken place in lots of other major cities. Furthermore, we have to wait 100 days to let him prove his political program.
